How to Stop Vape Cravings: 12 Things to Do When the Urge Hits
A vape craving can feel like an emergency. Your chest tightens, your hand goes to your pocket, and every thought points to one thing. But a craving is not an order. It's a wave: it builds, it peaks, and it passes, usually within a few minutes, whether you vape or not.
You don't need to make cravings disappear. You need to get through each one. Here's how.
What a nicotine craving actually is
When you vape often, your brain links nicotine with relief and with the moments you usually vape. When nicotine drops or a familiar moment arrives, your brain sends a strong signal: time for a puff. Each time you answer it, the link gets stronger. Each time you ride it out, it gets weaker.
12 things to do when a craving hits
- Delay five minutes. Don't say "never". Say "not for five minutes". Then do something from this list.
- Drink a glass of cold water, slowly, all the way down.
- Breathe: four seconds in, six seconds out, ten times. It gives you the slow exhale you miss from vaping. See breathing exercises for cravings.
- Change rooms. Cravings are tied to places. Stand up and go somewhere else.
- Brush your teeth. A fresh mouth makes vaping less appealing.
- Chew gum or have something crunchy, like carrots, apple or ice.
- Move: ten squats, a flight of stairs, a walk round the block.
- Splash cold water on your face. It's a quick reset.
- Text someone who knows you're quitting. Just "craving, talk me down" is enough.
- Read your reasons. Keep your list of why you're quitting on your phone.
- Play something quick that keeps your hands busy for a couple of minutes.
- Surf the urge. Notice the craving in your body, name it, and watch it rise and fall without acting on it. See urge surfing.

Plan for your biggest triggers
Most cravings come at the same few moments: waking up, coffee, after meals, driving, breaks, stress, drinking. Pick a swap in advance for each. "When I finish eating, I'll go for a five-minute walk" beats deciding on the spot. Read more in vaping triggers and how to handle them.
Cravings get weaker
Early on, cravings come often and feel strong. Over a few weeks they come less often and fade faster. Every one you get through is practice, and it counts, even if it doesn't feel like it.
Count your wins. Logging each craving you beat turns an invisible struggle into progress you can see.
Keep help one tap away
Unvapd, the app we built to help people quit vaping, puts most of this list behind one button. Tap Panic when a craving hits and you get personal messages, a timer that shows you holding on, "Try instead" ideas like cold water, a walk or one song, and breathing. Afterwards you can tag what set it off, so you learn your pattern.
