How to Quit Vaping Cold Turkey (and Actually Make It Stick)

Quitting cold turkey means stopping completely, from one day to the next, without cutting down first. It's simple, it's fast, and lots of people succeed with it. It also means the first few days are intense. Here's how to do it well.

Is quitting vaping cold turkey a good idea?

For many people, yes. The advantages:

  • It's clear. No counting puffs, no "is this allowed?". You don't vape.
  • Withdrawal is over sooner. You go through it once, instead of stretching it out.
  • No negotiation. Tapering can drift back up; cold turkey leaves no room.

The downside is that withdrawal can feel stronger in the first days. If you vape very heavily, or you've tried cold turkey several times without success, a step-down approach or nicotine replacement might suit you better. See how to taper off vaping, and ask a pharmacist or doctor about options.

Before your quit day

  • Pick a day in the next week or two, ideally a quieter one.
  • Write down your reasons and keep them on your phone.
  • Get rid of every vape, pod and liquid the night before.
  • Stock up: water bottle, gum, mints, crunchy snacks.
  • Tell one or two people, and ask them to check in.
  • Plan swaps for your top triggers. See vaping triggers.

The 7-day survival plan

Day 1

Keep busy. Change your routine slightly: a different route, coffee somewhere new, a walk after meals. Every time a craving hits, delay five minutes and do something else.

Days 2 and 3

Often the hardest. Expect irritability and strong cravings. Go easy on yourself: earlier nights, no big decisions, no alcohol. Move your body at least once a day.

Days 4 and 5

Cravings are still there, but you've proved you can get through them. Notice which moments are toughest and plan for them.

Days 6 and 7

One week. Celebrate it properly. You've gone through the worst of withdrawal for most people.

Day 1

Busy and determined.

Day 2–3

The peak. Hold on.

Day 4–5

Turning the corner.

Day 7

One week. Celebrate.

Your first week cold turkey.

What to do in a craving

  • Cold water, slowly
  • Ten slow breaths, longer out than in
  • A quick walk or ten squats
  • Gum or something crunchy
  • Text someone

If you slip

One puff doesn't mean you've failed, but it does make the next craving stronger, so treat it seriously: throw away whatever you used, work out what triggered it, and carry on from where you are. Don't wait until Monday. See what to do after a vaping relapse.
